Vairocana Buddha – The Origin of the Dhyani Buddhas

The name Vairochana means "He Who is Like the Sun" or "the Radiating One." Vairochana represents either the integration of or the origin of the Dhyani Buddhas. His wisdom is the Wisdom of the Dharmadhatu. The Dharmadhatu is the Realm of Truth, in which all things exist as they really are. Vairocana's wisdom is also referred to as the All-Pervading Wisdom of the Dharmakaya. The Dharmakaya is the Body of the Law, or the absolute Buddha nature. Vairochana's transcendent wisdom reveals the realm of highest reality and overcomes the poison of ignorance, or delusion. His wisdom is considered to be the origin of or the total of all the wisdoms of the Dhyani Buddhas. Vairochana is usually located in the center of mandalas of the Dhyani Buddhas. His color is white, symbolizing a pure consciousness. Vairochana rules over the element of ether and embodies the Skandha of consciousness. In some systems, Vairochana is associated with the Skandha of form. His symbol is the Dharmachakra, the wheel of the Teaching, or the wheel of the Law. It denotes the teaching of the Buddha. Its eight spokes represent the Noble Eightfold Path, which Gautama revealed in his first sermon after his enlightenment. This symbol is printed around the border of the lithograph. Vairocana's lotus throne is supported by the lion, symbol of courage, boldness and an eager, advancing spirit. Ratnasambhava Buddha – The Third of the Five Dhyani Buddhas

Ratnasambhava is the third of the five Transcendental Buddhas. Ratnasambhava is yellow and his wisdom is associated with experience and known as representing the "primordial wisdom of equality. Ratnasambhava is associated with the human realm on the wheel of life. Ratnasambhava is known for his equanimity reminding us that all human beings are precious. Ratnasambhava faces the south in with his consort Mamaki.
Ratnasambhava means ‘Born from the Jewel,’ ‘Ratna’ signifying jewel in Sanskrit. Ratnasambhava is believed to transform the negative human trait of pride into the wisdom of sameness. This wisdom brings out the common features of human experience and makes us see the common humanity underlying all men and women. In this state of enlightenment, there is nobody superior or inferior to the other, leaving no scope for pride to develop. Ratnasambhava displays the Varada Mudra. This Mudra symbolizes charity and boon granting. Indeed his distinct emblem is a jewel (Ratna), associating him with riches and Ratnasambhava is sometimes described as the Buddha of giving. But he makes no distinction and gives freely to all (the wisdom of sameness). All beings are equally precious to him. Whatever our social position, race, sex, or life form, we are all made from a common clay. The grace of Ratnasambhava shines equally on the palace and dung heap. Meditating on his wisdom we develop solidarity with all humanity, nay with all forms of life. Ratnasambhava’s color is yellow. This is the color of the earth. The earth too is extremely generous in sharing with us her riches. Also she gives without any expectation or favor in return. She gives and also receives all equally. The earth is thus the great leveler. Similarly, Ratnasambhava’s radiance dissolves all boundaries of self and the other. We can then just share with others – without any associated sense of giving, because giving requires a ‘self’ to give and ‘others’ to receive, a duality which Ratnasambhava helps us transcend. The animal associated with Ratnasambhava is the horse, who ferries over the suffering beings with full vigor. It also suggests a journey, a spiritual voyage such as that on which the Buddha – to – be set forth when he left his life at home, riding on his faithful charger.
Ratnasambhava guards over the direction south. The sun is in the south at noon-time. Its rays are then a light-golden-yellow, the hue of Ratnasambhava himself.

Amitabha Buddha – THE BUDDHA OF INFINITE LIGHT

Amitabha means "Infinite Light." Amitabha's Discriminating Wisdom conquers the poison of the passions – all cravings, covetousness, greed and lust. With this wisdom, the disciple discerns all beings separately yet knows every being as an individual expression of the One. In the mandala of the Dhyani Buddhas, Amitabha is positioned to the west. His color is rose (red), the color of the setting sun. Amitabha Buddha rules over the element of fire and personifies the Skandha of perception. Thus, the eye and the faculty of seeing are associated with Amitabha. The peacock, with "eyes" on its plumes, is his throne-bearer. The peacock symbolizes grace. Amitabha's symbol is the padma, or lotus, placed between him and Vairochana in this Mandala. In Buddhism, the lotus can symbolize many things, including spiritual enfoldment, purity, the true nature of beings realized through enlightenment, and compassion, the purified form of passion. Amitabha denotes "Boundless Light" or Incomprehensible.
Devotees aspire to be reborn in Amitabha's Western Paradise, known as Sukhavati, where conditions are ideal for attaining enlightenment. His mudra is the dhyana (meditation) mudra. His bija is Hrih and his mantra is Om Amitabha Hrih. Some consider Amitabha to be synonymous with Amitayus, the Buddha of Infinite Life. Others honor Amitayus as a form of Amitabha or as a separate Buddha.

Amoghasiddhi Buddha – The Fifth Dhyani Buddha

Amoghshiddhi Buddha is the fifth Dhyani Buddha in order. His left hand lies open on the lap and the right exhibits the Abhaya mudra. Amoghasiddhi represents cosmic element of Samskara (Conformation). Amoghasiddhi is of green color and his recognition symbol is the Viswa Vajra or the double thunderbolt or Double Dorje. His attributes are power and energy that is both subtle and often hidden. Amoghasiddhi is the supreme Siddhi – the magic power of enlightenment. Amoghasiddhi always faces the North. He is the embodiment of the rainy season. Sometimes a serpent with seven heads forms the background as an umbrella. In front of his shrines, therefore, is found a small square pit which is meant for the snake. His vehicle is Garuda.
Amoghasiddhi is realization of all-accomplishing wisdom. The Tibetan word for Buddha Amoghasiddhi is Sangay Donyodtrubpa. The word Danyod means “meaningful” and the word Trubpa means “accomplishment.” So Buddha Amoghasiddhi means “whatever is meaningful and fruitful is accomplished.” Amoghasiddhi is also the complete purification of jealousy, which is a hindrance for both material and spiritual success. His activity is perfect accomplishment and fulfillment of meaningful aims. Furthermore, his activity removes ordinary daily hindrances such as illnesses and obstacles. This is why Amoghasiddhi's activity is meaningful accomplishment. Buddha Amoghasiddhi holds a Double – Vajra in the form of a cross in his left hand, which symbolizes that his activity pervades and touches all directions. He is green in color and he sits in the full lotus posture. The left hand of all five Dhyana Buddhas rests in the meditative posture of the changeless realization of Dharmata. Amoghasiddhi's right hand is in the Mudra of fearless protection. He protects all living beings from any mishaps, obstacles, and negative influences. So his posture is known as “the Mudra of fearless protection.” He is white which represents “without fault” and he rests in the center to the mandala and is on a lion's throne. Amoghasiddhi is green and resides in the north holding a sword representing the cutting of existence. Amoghasiddhi is often depicted in union with his wisdom consort Damtsig Drolma the Green Tara, who embodies the pure element of air.

Aparmita – THE BUDDHA OF INFINITE LIGHT

Aparmita is the name given to Amitabha in his character of bestower of longevity. Aparmita may be turned either a “Crowned Buddha or a Bodhisattva and is therefore richly clad and wears the thirteen ornaments. His hair is painted blue and falls on either side to his elbows or may be curiously coiled. Aparmita is seated like Buddha and his hands lie on his lap in Dhyana Mudra holding the ambrosia vase, his special emblem. The vase is richly decorated and from the cover fall four strings of beads which represent sacred pills. In the preliminary worship, the pills made from buttered dough and the ambrosia brewed from spirit or beer and offered in a skull bowl to the great image of Aparmita. The lama then places a vajra on the ambrosia vase, which the image of Amitayus holds in its lap, and applies a cord, which is attached to the vajra, his own heart. The wine in the ambrosia vase is then consecrated and the people partake of it as well as of the sacred pills with the firm conviction that there lives will be prolonged through their faith in Aparmita.

GuruGuru Padmasambhava – The Precious Master

Guru Padmasambhava also Guru Rinpoche, the Precious Master — is revered throughout the Himalayan ranges as a Second Buddha. Invited from India in the eighth century to subjugate the forces inhibiting the spread of Shakyamuni's teachings, Guru Rinpoche managed to transform hitherto hostile powers into guardians and protectors of the pure dharma and, in the process, left an indelible mark on the entire Himalayan region. In quite a literal sense, Guru Rinpoche's mark is to be found throughout the Himalayan ranges in and around the many caves Guru Rinpoche used for meditation. At these sites one can still see handprints and footprints of the Precious Master impressed into solid rock, mute testimony to the extraordinary power this fully accomplished yogi and tantric magician exercised over the external and internal elements. Now, in the pure depth of the heavens, Vajrasattva, allowing the Metamorphic Body to be seen, seared upon an elephant, holding a golden vajra to his heart with his right hand, and with his left hand holding a silver bell at his side, crowned with the ornaments of the Five Transcendent Buddhas, his body covered with all the perfect ornaments, decorated with bones at the shoulders, at the wrists, and at the ankles, brilliant with the white glitter of crystal. Perfectly learned in the Mahayoga, Vajrasattva reveals as a dwelling the celestial palace of the three Baskets, reveals as gods and goddesses the whole internal essence, reveals as Mantra the entire murmur of the words, reveals as enchantments everything which is of body, speech, and mind. And Guru Rinpoche sets forth the Tantras of the Mahayoga, which are, according to the whole classification, five hundred thousand, and the whole of which forms the eighteen root Tantras.

These powerful attributes show Guru Rinpoche wearing an expression of great force and concentration while holding various implements of power such as the Vajra scepter, skull – cup and trident staff called Kathvanga. His right hand brandishes a Vajra, while the left hand, resting on his lap, supports the Vase of immortality. Guru Rinpoche is dressed not only in the robes of a monk but also in the garments of a king to indicate that Guru Rinpoche is a member of both worldly and religious royalty. |
