There are many instruments used in both sacred/monastic rituals and in traditional/folk music. Monastic rituals include idiophones, membranophones, and aerophones, whereas traditional/folk music of the Tibetan peoples also includes chordophones. Idiophones are instruments that create sound through their own vibrations, such as bells or cymbals. Membranophones are instruments having some sort of membrane stretched over them, which when struck, produces a vibration and hence sound, like a drum. Aerophones are those instruments that create sound by having air blown through them, like a flute or a trumpet. Chordophones have some type of stretched string attached which when plucked or bowed vibrates, creating sound, e.g. a guitar.
